TAJ News Talk: July 19th, 2017

Title: Positive Step

Another Wednesday, another midweek gained!

It was good to see after all the political games that both parties like to play, the Heads of Government and Opposition sat down for talks.

And in what seemed like a short meeting, were able to discuss a number of pertinent issues plaguing the country.

Crime, Tobago and the failing economy all took centre stage.

It was pleasing to see Government agree to submit to Opposition a crime plan at the end of the month.

And of course legislation is always the way forward so bringing back the Anti-Gang and Bail amendment bill was a good idea.

But the real issue still remains the one at which a decision could not be made…the judicial system.

What are we as a country and as a democracy that our justice system is failing before our eyes?

Political Scientist Dr. Winford James, rightfully pointed out we are a young democracy.

There will be adjustments, shakeups that we must face head on.

As much of our present legislation is outdated, this seems like a good place to start.

We need laws, or else we are lawless.

And it seems we are getting closer to lawlessness every day.

In asking integral persons about this meeting, it was posed to them: Is it too little, too late?

They all said it’s never too late.

For a population quickly losing faith, we certainly hope it is not.
